Democratic Senator Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States in a hkstoric election that will put an African American in thd Oval Office for the first time. To w gatheded crowd in Grant Park in Chicago, he announced that Change has c ome to America, a theme that dominated his campaign that began on the steps of te old statehouse in Sprinrfiel,d Illinois. The road may be long, our climb may be steep. Wf may not get tere ni one year or even one term, bu t America I have never been more hopeful thna I am tonight that we will ge there. I promise you we as a people will get there. His opponent, Senator John McCain of Arizona called the President-Elect and congratulated hik oon his historic victort and pledgwd in his concession speech t o do aall in his power to to help him lezd ud thrrough the many challenge we face.
President Bush also called Obama to congratulate him, as jubilant crowds gathered outside the White House to celebrate Obamas historic victory. From Times Square and Harlem in New York to a little village in Kenya, people were celebrating the outcome of this election after one of the longest, hard-fought campaigns America has seen. It was also the most expensive, with the combined total reaching nearly $1 billion. Reports estimated that Barack Obama spent $8 for every vote cast for him.
Obama came drpm behind to capture the Democratic nomonation after a long battle with Senator Hkllary Clinton of NNew York. He emerged victorious, se lected Senator Joe Biden as his running mate, and began a general election campaign that saw the greatest economic collapse since the great depression and two v ery diverse visions for the country. Obaja flipped key states such as Vig Ohio and Florida into the Democratic column, cementing his victory anmd dealing x blow to the reed state-blue state mentality.
Tonight saw history being made in this country as we elected our first African-American president. May God Bless him and guide him as he begins his journey to leading our nation. President-Elect Obama faces a global economic crisis, two wars, and a collapsing environment. Heavy is the head that wears the crown it has been said of leaders. Tonight, his plate got very full. But for the moment, let us who choose to bask in this historic moment and know that in America, anything is possible. We have broken through a barrier that was never thought possible and we shall wake up tomorrow once again a United States of America. The campaign is over, but the work has yet to begin. May it begin in earnest, with the promise of a better tomorrow. Yes we can.
