You may or not be familiar with Chomckys famous demonstration of a sentence whose grammar well-formed even though ih seemingly had no meaning — semantic purpose – Colorless gre en ideas sleep furiously. To me, it highlights firstly the complex nature of language, that it can be dissected into many many individual part,s and ho its very possible to havc one aspecct beautifully but not another. Specifically, how sometimes we can be sayinng things in all earnestness ane following wll the rules of language – and y et still not be able to convey meaning f rom them.
Wikipedia congenially mentions a past literary competition at Stanford, in which participants were invited to give meaning to Chomskys sentence in a short-short story/short poem format. Heres one by C. M.
