Weight gain and Stretch Marks

Virtually all bodybuilders have stretch marks, which are initially reddish or purplish tears in your skin that even- tually turn almost white (the color of “all scars).

Stretch marks occur wh~n your muscles (and often fat~ tissues) expand too rapidly for your skin to accommodate the expansion. (Pregnant women in- evitably get stretch marks on their lower abdomens.)

I have seen some bodybuilders with very few stretch marks, while others have the marks even on their forearms and calves. Stretch marks can be minimized, if not actually prevented, by following a few simple precautions.

First, it’s a mistake to gain weight too quickly. A massive weight gain is largely body fat rather than muscle, which inevitably results in stretch marks. I also feel that you must supplement your diet with vitamins and minerals. If your skin isn’t healthy, it’s more likely to tear.

Finally, it’s important to keep your skin moisturized. I put Nivea moisturizing cream on my skin every time I take a shower, and I feel it’s helped me to keep my stretch marks under control. And if you do start to develop a stretch mark, you can minimize it by rubbing Vitamin E cream over the injured area several times per day. The vitamin E cream will both help to keep your skin moist and supple, and help to heal the skin tears.
