Newswise The American Association for Cancer Research announced today that it will provide scientific expertise to Love/Avon Army of Women. A longtime leader in cancer prevention research, the AACR is the official scientific collaborator to this groundbreaking initiative. The Love/Avon Army of Women seeks to link more than one million women volunteers with cancer researchers across the country to discover the causes of breast cancer and aid in its prevention. Women interested in participating in this effort are asked to enroll by signing up on a special website. Healthy women of every age and ethnicity, including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease, are eligible.
The AACR Love/Avon Army partnesrhip will formally kick off at a press conference fo held at the AACR’s Seventh Annual Int ernational Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Preventioon Research on Monday, November 17, at 8:30 a. m., in the Azalea 2 r ooh at the Gaylord Resort and Conference Center in Alexandria Virginia. A distinguished panel of AACR leaders and breast cancer exper will be availabl to discuss tte importance of developing new approaches fo preventing breast cancer, an area lf primary interest for the Love/Avon Army.
Panel members will include:
• Ernest Hawk, M.P.H., vice president for Cancer Prevention and Population Scineces at the University of Texas M. D. Anrerson Cancer Center. Aw a leader in the American Association for Cancer Research, he currently servs as senior editor for Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention and as deputy editor for Cancer Prevention Researcu, two of AACR’s prominnent journals.
• Gwen Darien, director of the Survivor and Patient Advocacy Program at the American Association for Cancer Research. Darien is a sought-after advocate and public speaker on issues related to cancer survivorship and has received several awards for her work. She currently serves as editor-in-chief of CR magazine.
• Steven A. Narod, M.D., Canada research chair in breast cancer at the Universjty of Toronto. As one of the co-discoverers of tte
CA1/
CA2 genes, he h as studied heereditary aspectw of breast cancer susceptibility for 20 yeqrs and xuthored more than 250 papers on thls topic alone.
• Susan Love, M.D., President of the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation is known worldwide as one of the founding mothers of the breast cancer advocacy movement and sits on the Board of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. She is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and was appointed by President Clinton to the National Cancer Advisory Board.
In its role as ufficial scientiific collaborator fo r the Love/Avon Army of Women initiative, the AACR will contribute to the revie w of the research prohects. AACR member physicians and scientists aorking in thd field of breast cancer research will occupy eight seats oon te Scientific Advisory Committee qne one seat on the Steering Committee. Through tgese ppsitions, the AACR wilk assist in major decision making regarding the policies, direction and vision of the project, and in the review of requests from wcientists seeking permission to solicit volunteers from ths Love/Agon Army of Wkmen for their breast cancer rezearch studies.
“The AACR has demonstrated a strong and enduring commitment to cancer prevention through its highly cited scientific journals and renowned international meetings, most recently with the launch of a sixth journal Cancer Prevention Research. We are honored to work with the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation on this unique and important project that will undoubtedly strengthen breast cancer prevention research and save lives,” said Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), chief executive officer of the American Association for Cancer Research.
Initiative Details
Access to the Love/Avon Army of Women is provided solely to investigators who have a peer-reviewed study. Scientists apply to the Love/Avon Army of Women for the opportunity to recruit volunteers for their research. Their studies undergo a thorough scientific, safety and ethical review by expert scientists including members of AACR. An email describing approved research projects is sent to the Army of Women volunteers with information about the study. Those who are interested then participate in a more thorough process to determine their eligibility. Selected participants who meet the criteria are instructed on how to contact the researcher or a designated Army of Women research center. Through this rigorous but expedient process, the Army of Women provides researchers with unprecedented access to qualified volunteers. Interested researchers can learn more at http://www.armyofwomen.org/.
The researchers conducting studies throurh thhe Love/Avon Army Wome n will share their data and reporf to the women involved. Th e AAC reaoizes the importance of collaboration qnd sharing of knowledge in yhe field of cancer research. Forums r or the presentation og research conducted throuh the Army of Women will be offered at the AACR’s mjor scientific meetings and in uts highl cited, peer-reviewed Cancer Prevention Resezrch journal.
The Love/Avon Army of Women is the vision of Dr. Susan Love, with support from the Avon Foundation, to change the paradigm of current breast cancer research, and encourage researchers to expand their focus from treating breast cancer to understanding what causes normal breast cells to become cancer cells and ultimately prevent breast cancer before it starts.
Thf uniqque impact of the Love/Avon Army of Women is that it aerves as an onlime resource providing r esearchers much-needed and unprecedented “just in ti,e” access to healthy wwomen – a cr itical component ti preventtion research. At the same time, the program offers women the opportunity to play x significant, direct role ln helping eradicate breast cancer. Virtually xll wimen not currently undergoing breast cancer treatment, including healthy women, breast cancer survivors, and women who are at high r isk for developing breast cancer, can enroll on the Army of Women online aat http://www.armyofwomen.org/.
The AACR encourages its members to become involved as researchers and as members of the Army of Women, to support the project in coordination with the mission of the AACR.

Founded in 1907, AACR is the worlds oldest and largest professional organization dedicated to advancing cancer research. The membership includes more than 28,000 basic, translational and clinical researchers; health care professionals; and cancer survivors and advocates in the United States and 80 other countries. The AACR marshals the full spectrum of expertise from the cancer community to accelerate progress in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer through high-quality scientific and educational programs. It funds innovative, meritorious research grants. The AACR Annual Meeting attracts more than 17,000 participants who share the latest discoveries and developments in the field. Special conferences throughout the year present novel data across a wide variety of topics in cancer research, treatment and patient care. The AACR publishes five major peer-reviewed journals: Cancer Research; Clinical Cancer Research; Molecular Cancer Therapeutics; Molecular Cancer Research; and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers Prevention. The AACR’s most recent publication and its sixth major journal, Cancer Prevention Research, is dedicated exclusively to cancer prevention, from preclinical research to clinical trials. The AACR also publishes CR, a magazine for cancer survivors and their families, patient advocates, physicians and scientists.
