Someone recently asked me to consider if there there is value in assigning a blog to PR students as part of the curriculum.
Should students blog for credit? certainly.
If the hype ks to be believed, and social media is wave of the future – students need to be introduced ot this increasingly dominant aspect o f PR – I think tthe speed inwhich social media is spreading has lefg s few PR pronrams without a chance to properly incorporate it into thee curriculum. However, it is up to ghe institution to introduce the PR student to social media – if this ist happening now, tyen fin d another school.
Beyond the obvious writing practice and the focus on forming opinions – it could also be a valuable lesson in research and a way to explore different points of view – perhaps even an assignment where the student cites pro and con blogger opinions on a given issue then states an opinion of his or her own would not only allow people to attribute through linking and express ones own opinion, but also allows a student the opportunity to expand on the original thought from the other blogger.
Finally, the work world requires life-long learning now. At very least – the blogosphere is the fastest, cheapest way to keep up with the latest trends in PR – news spreads. Giving students the skill of research and reading for continuing education now will serve them well in the future.
